Method 1: Standard Archives Manager
There is a huge number of archivers with a graphical interface that allow you to unpack the files of the TAR.BZ2 format. However, sometimes their installation is required, because in many Linux distributions, this tool is already built-in and the default opens the downloaded files. Therefore, we offer as the first way to disassemble the principle of interaction with the standard archive manager, having broken through it TAR.BZ2, and it looks like this:
- To begin with, we advise you to make sure that the desired program does not exactly apply to a convenient batch format, for example, DEB or RPM. If you manage to find exactly such an assembly, the installation process will become much easier. In the case when this could not be done, proceed to download tar.bz2.
- When the browser window appears with the selection of file processing, specify the "Save File" option and start downloading.
- Next, you need to go to the location of the downloaded archive and click on it with the left mouse button twice to open for editing.
- Here you can unpack individual files if there is a need for it, simply moving them to the desired location.
- If you wish to handle absolutely all objects should be right to "unpack".
- A new browser window opens. Here, configure the settings of the items, and then click on the active green "Extract" button.
- The unpacking procedure will begin. It can take some time that depends on the overall size of the archive and speed of the computer.
- You will be notified that the operation is completed successfully.
As can be seen, there is nothing difficult in managing the standard archive manager. Its graphical interface is implemented as much as possible, and the presence of the Russian language will help even the most novice users to deal with this program.
Method 2: third-party archives managers
Above, we have already mentioned that there are a number of specialized software with GUI, which is concentrated at work with archives. Today we will not list them all, but pay attention to P7zip. This method should be considered if the first one was inappropriate, and the desire to use console commands is not available.
- You can install this component through the Terminal. To do this, run it through the application menu or use the hot key Ctrl + Alt + T.
- Here enter the Sudo APT-Get Install P7zip-Full command and click on ENTER to activate it.
- Confirm the authenticity of the account by writing a superuser password. In this row, the characters are entered, but are not displayed, so it is worth considering this when writing.
- If this installation method is not suitable, you will need to start the "Application Manager".
- Here, use the search string to find the corresponding software.
- Lay the appropriate result in the extradition and go to the software page.
- It remains only to click on "Install" to start the installation process.
- However, this action will have to confirm by specifying a password for root access.
- Expect the installation end.
- After that, you can run P7zip right through the "Application Manager" or the icon in the menu.
- Use the navigation bar and the address bar to find the required directory. The main disadvantage of P7zip is the lack of support for Cyrillic, so some characters can be transformed into cracks, but it does not affect the correctness of the software.
- After selecting files or directories, click on Extract.
- Select the folder where you want to move files, and wait for the unpacking operation.
Approximately the same principle function and other archivers. In the same "application manager" or the official documentation of the distribution used, you can easily find suitable options if the above program is not suitable for any reason.
Method 3: Console Tar Utility
In almost all known distributions written on Linux, there is a built-in console utility called tar. It is responsible for the unpacking and installation of the available archives and, accordingly, supports the file format in question today. If you do not want to install additional programs with a graphical interface, TAR is the only correct unpacking option, and this process is carried out as follows:
- To begin with, let's determine the exact location and name of the desired archive. To do this, open it through the file manager, click on the PCM directory and in the context menu, select "Properties".
- Here on the "Basic" tab, you are interested in the Parent Folder item.
- Now that the necessary information is obtained, run the console in a convenient way.
- Here enter tar xfvj archive.tar.bz2 to unpack the archive, while replace the Archive.tar.bz2 on the name of the existing object by adding its location if it is not in the current directory.
- You will be able to follow the process of processing each element in real time, and at the end, a new input line will appear, which means successful extraction.
- Use the TAR XFVJ Archive.tar.bz2 -c / Var / WWW type string if you want to specify the location where you want to unpack files. / VAR / WWW - Path for extracting.
It was all that we wanted to tell about the rules and accessible ways to unpack the archives of the TAR.BZ2 format in Linux. You only have to choose the optimal method and follow the instructions to successfully cope with the task.
