Data recovery after formatting in RS Partition Recovery

Review of the RS PARTITION Recovery data recovery program
In the review, the best programs for data recovery, I have already mentioned the Complex by Recovery Software and promised that a little later consider these programs in more detail. Let's start with the most "advanced" and expensive product - RS Partition Recovery (you can download the trial version of the program from the official site of the developer http://recovery-software.ru/downloads). The cost of the RS Partition Recovery license for home use is 2999 rubles. However, if the program really regularly performs all the functions that are stated, the price is not so great - one-time appeal to any "computer help" to restore the files deleted from the flash drive, data from a damaged or formatted hard disk will cost a similar or higher Price (despite the fact that the price list is indicated "from 1000 rubles").

Installing and Starting RS Partition Recovery

The process of installing a program to recover RS Partition Recovery is no different from installing any other software. And upon completion of the installation in the dialog box, the check mark "Run RS Partition Recovery" will stand. The next thing you see is the file recovery wizard dialog box. Perhaps it is for them that we start and use, as it is the most familiar and easy way to use most of the programs for an ordinary user.

Experiment: Restore files from a flash drive after they are removed and formatting USB media

To check the possibilities of RS Partition Recovery, I have prepared its special, serving for experiments, USB USB flash drive as follows:

  • Formatted it in the NTFS file system
  • Created two folders on a carrier: photos1 and photos2, in each of which placed several high-quality family photos taken recently in Moscow.
  • In the root of the disk put a video, the size of a little more than 50 megabytes.
  • Removed all these files.
  • Formatted USB flash drive in FAT32

Not exactly that, but something like this might happen, for example, when a memory card is inserted from one device to another is automatically formatted as a result of photos, music, videos, or other (often necessary) files are lost.

For the described attempt, let's try to use the File Recovery Wizard at RS Partition Recovery. First of all, you should specify, from which carrier will be recovered (the picture was higher).

Recovery Analysis Type

At the next stage, it will be proposed to choose a complete or fast analysis, as well as parameters for complete analysis. Given that I am a regular user, who does not know what happened to the memory stick and what happened to all my pictures, I note the "full analysis" and expose all the checkboxes in the hope that it would work. We wait. For a flash drive, the process of 8 gigabytes took less than 15 minutes.

The result is as follows:

File recovery result

Thus, a reformatted NTFS partition was discovered with the entire folder structure in it, and in the Deep Collective folder you can see sorted files that were also detected on the media. Do not restore files, you can walk along the folder structure and view graphic, audio and video files in the preview window. As you can see in the image above, my video is available for recovery and can be viewed. Similarly, I managed to view and most photos.

Damaged photos

Damaged photos

However, for four photos (out of 60 with something), the preview was unavailable, the dimensions are unknown, and the forecast for recovery in the status of "badly". And I will try to restore, because with the rest obviously, that everything is in order.

Restore files

You can restore a separate file, several files or folders you can right-click on them, and selecting "Restore" in the context menu. You can also use the appropriate button on the toolbar. The file restore wizard window will again appear, in which you will need to choose where to save them. I chose a hard disk (it should be noted that in no case the data cannot be saved on the same medium from which recovery is made), after which it was proposed to specify the path and click the Restore button.

Recovery completed

The process took one second (I try to recover files whose preview in the RS Partition Recovery window does not work). However, as it turned out, these four photos are damaged and the viewing is not subject to (tested several viewers and editors, including XnView and IrfanViewer, with which it is often possible to view damaged JPG files that do not open anywhere else).

All other files were also restored, everything is in order with them, no damage and completely to be viewed. What happened to the above four for me and remained a mystery. However, there is an idea to use these files: I will fill them with the RS File Repair program from the same developer, which is designed to restore damaged photo files.

Summarizing

With the help of RS Partition Recovery, it was possible in automatic mode (using the wizard) without the use of any special knowledge to restore most of the files (more than 90%), which were first deleted, and then the media was reformatted in another file system. According to an obscure reason, four files could not be restored in its original form, but they have a sure size, and are quite likely to be "repairs" (check in the future).

I note that free decisions, such as the well-known Recuva, do not find any files on the flash drive at all, over which the operation described at the beginning of the experiment, and therefore, if you cannot restore files in other ways, and they are really important - use RS Partition Recovery A rather good choice: does not require special skills and is very effective. However, in some cases, for example, to restore randomly remote photos, it will be better to buy another, the cheaper product of the company specifically designed for these purposes: it will cost three times cheaper and will give the same result.

In addition to the considered version of the program, RS Partition Recovery allows you to work with disk images (create, mount, restore files from images), which may be useful in many cases and, most importantly, allows not to affect the carrier itself for the recovery process, reducing the risk Final failure. In addition, there is a built-in hex editor, for those who know how to use it. I do not know how I suspect that with it, you can manually correct the headlines of damaged files that are not viewed after recovery.
