How to use Windows 10 disk spaces

Using Windows 10 disk spaces
In Windows 10 (and 8) there is a built-in "disk space" function, which allows you to create a mirror copy of the data on several physical hard drives or use multiple disks as one disk, i.e. Create a kind of software RAID arrays.

In this manual - in detail how you can configure disk spaces, what options are available and what is necessary to use them.

To create disk spaces, it is necessary that more than one physical hard disk or SSD can be installed on the computer, and it is permissible to use external USB drives (the same accumulator size is not required).

The following types of disk spaces are available.

  • Simple - several disks are used as one disk, any protection against information loss is not provided.
  • A double-sided mirror - data is duplicated on two disks, with the failure of one of the disks, the data remains available.
  • A tripartite mirror - no less than five physical disks are required for use, the data are stored in case of failure of two disks.
  • "Parity" - a dial space with parity is created (control data that allows not to lose the data when one of the disks fail, with a common available place in space more than when using mirrors), not less than 3 discs.

Creating disk space

Important: All data from disks used to create disk space will be deleted during the process.

Create disk spaces in Windows 10 using the appropriate item in the control panel.

  1. Open the control panel (you can start typing "Control Panel" in the search or press the Win + R keys and enter Control).
  2. Switch the control panel in the "icons" view and open the "Disk space" item.

  3. Click "Create a new pool and disk space."

  4. If there are non-formatted disks, you will see them in the list, as in the screenshot (mark those discs you want to use in disk space). In case the disks are already formatted, you will see a warning that these data will be lost. Similarly, select those discs you want to use to create disk space. Click the Create Pool button.
    Select drives for disk space
  5. In the next step, you can choose a disk letter, under which the disk space will be mounted in Windows 10, the file system (if you use the refs file system, then you will receive automatic error correction and more reliable storage), type of disk space (in the "Stability type" field. When you select each type, in the "Size" field you can see which space size will be available for recording (place on disks that will be reserved for copies of data and control data will not be available for recording). Click the "Create disk space" button and Wait for the process to complete.
    Select type disk space
  6. Upon completion of the process, you will return to the disk space control page in the control panel. In the future, you can also add discs to the disk space or remove them from it.
    Windows 10 disk space parameters

In Windows 10 Explorer, the created disk space will be displayed as a regular computer disc or laptop for which all the same actions that are available for a conventional physical disk are available.

Disk space in the conductor

At the same time, if you used a disk space with a "mirror" stability type, upon failover, one of the disks (or two, in the case of a "trilateral mirror") or even when they are accidentally disconnected from the computer, in the conductor you will still see Disk and all data on it. However, in disk space parameters will appear warnings, as in the screenshot below (the corresponding notification will also appear in the Windows 10 notification center).

Disk space error in windows 10

If this happened, you should find out what is the reason and, if necessary, add new disks into disk space, replacing faulty.
